ELECTRA W. BAKER

Electra W. Baker, of 1229 Commerce St., and formerlly of 426 King St., Malvern Hill Apts., Portsmouth, departed this life after a long and courageous battle on May 27, 1996.

``Leximama,'' as she was affectionately called, was born on Aug. 13, 1907, in Verona, N.C., to the late David Ward and Zera Ward White. She was married to the late Ernest Baker. Sister Baker was a grand officer of the Lilly of the Valley Tents (NU)24. ``Leximama'' was a retired baker from the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. She joined Ebenezer Baptist Church in July of 1941. She participated in the church Missionary Society, Dorcus Bible Class and Christ Mission Club.

She leaves to mourn her passing a tremendously devoted cousin, Mrs. Esther L. Hines; a godchild, Mrs. Kathryn H. Williams of Norfolk; five cousins, Lillie Mae Roberts of Maysville, N.C., Elston L. Hines of the home, Henry C. Hines of Houston, Texas, Eugene W. Hines of Middle Island, N.Y., and Annie Flaxx of Portsmouth; a half-sister, Eliza Jane Dukes of Wilmington, N.C.; two stepsisters, Helen Williams and Elizabeth Holtzclaw of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two half-brothers, George and Leo Ward of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Homegoing services will be conducted by the Rev. Ben A. Beamer, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, located at 728 Effingham St., Portsmouth, Saturday, June 1, 1996, at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. A wake will be held for family and friends Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Home, Portsmouth. The body will be placed in the church for viewing at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The family will leave from 1229 Commerce St. at 1 p.m. Saturday for the procession to the church. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
