Thelma Hood Young died May 27, 1996, at her home. She was born Jan. 11, 1908 in Antioch, La., and was the widow of D. Crawford Young.
Mrs. Young's life was one of joy in giving to those with whom she lived. She was honored last summer by the Natchitoches Parish Library Board for her 50 years of service and commended by the Louisiana House of Representatives for her lifelong contributions to Natchitoches Parish. Among her many accomplishments were her degree from Louisiana Tech in home economics; her years of service to the Natchitoches Parish Library Board, of which she was chairman for 40 years; her service as one of the original presidents of Seedlings and Saplings (Louisiana Forestry Association); her memberships on the Mental Health Board, the Natchitoches Service League, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Board, the Cotillion Board in Shreveport, the Advisory Board of the Louisiana Outdoor Drama Association and the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches.
Mrs. Young was an ardent student and judge in the Louisiana Federated Garden Clubs and was a leader in organizing the High School Gardeners in the state of Louisiana as well as being on the Louisiana Judges council and a member of the National Board of Gardeners. She had an ardent love of music, as evidenced by her contributions as patroness of Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority at Northwestern State University. She was a member of the Campti Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano for many years.
Mrs. Young's celebration of life will be carried on by her children, David C. Young II of Rye Brook, N.Y., and Mary Helen McCoy of Norfolk; her children of marriage, Martha Glass Young of Rye Brook and Stephen Hartzell McCoy of Norfolk; her grandchildren, David Crawford Young III and his wife, Mardell Hart Young of Natchitoches, Stephen Crawford McCoy and Andrew Patton McCoy of Charlottesville, Va.; as well as her great-grandson, David Crawford Young IV, were her joy.
Services will be at First Methodist Church of Natchitoches at 10 a.m. Friday. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Greenwood Cemetery in Shreveport. The Revs. James Poole and Ryan Horton will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home, Natchitoches. Memorials may be made to Natchitoches Parish Library and the Louisiana Forestry Association in her name. Honorary pallbears will be J.C. Hicks, J.C. Cox, J. Hood, Dr. Z. Nash, Dr. S. Blum, C.R. Mathews, B. Weaver, and A. McPherson.
