AS COASTAL SKIES DARKENED, THE PIER FISHING BRIGHTENED

Calm seas and overcast conditions resulted in improved pier fishing along the Dare Coast Wednesday.

Kitty Hawk pier reported slow fishing during most of the morning. During the afternoon some Spanish mackerel, bluefish and sea mullet were landed.

Anglers at Avalon pier caught some bottom fish, blues and gray trout during the morning. Spanish mackerel and tailor blues were plentiful throughout the afternoon.

Spot, small bluefish, speckled trout, croaker, triggerfish and a few keeper flounder were landed off and on during the day at Nags Head Pier.

On Jennette's pier, small bottom fish along with some gray and speckled trout were taken.

A good run of Spanish mackerel and bluefish developed on Outer Banks Pier during the afternoon. Most of the fish were taken on Jeggers.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe pier reported some small gray trout, spot, sea mullet and bluefish landed early in the day. Some Spanish mackerel and blues were taken in the afternoon.

A few croaker, pigfish, sea mullet, and spot were caught by fishermen on Avon Pier.

Plenty of Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and quite a few keeper flounder were landed from Frisco Pier throughout the day.

Surf fishermen from Corolla to Oregon Inlet landed a few bottom fish and small blues.

Along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton a few small bottom fish and gray trout were landed.

A few puppy drum and sea mullet were beached along the north side of Cape Point. On the south beach a few croaker and spot were landed.

Inshore trolling outside of Oregon Inlet was good with plenty of bluefish and Spanish mackerel landed by half-day charters.

Headboats in the area reported fair catches of croakers, trout, and bluefish.

Fair numbers of yellowfin tuna were landed by the Oregon Inlet and Nerates Cove fleet. The fish ranged in size from 20 to 80 pounds. A few dolphin and wahoo were also taken. A blue marlin was released by the Garnett.

Charter boats operating off Hatteras caught a few tuna and dolphin. Plenty of tuna were seen but most refused to take bait. Two white marlin were released by the Connector.

The water temperature was 66 degrees Wednesday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and 70 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
