ROBBERY, ABDUCTION CHARGES

Police detectives have made five arrests for a series of crimes including rapes and robberies dating from 1994.

Dante Ashby, 32, and a 16-year-old have been charged with two counts of robbery, four counts of abduction, and four firearms charges in connection with an April robbery at a convenience store, according to Elizabeth Jones, a police spokeswoman.

About 9 p.m. on April 28, two men walked into the Little Earl's Market, in the 2600 block of South Battlefield Blvd., robbed employees of an undisclosed amount of money and raped a female employee. They fled on foot.

Detectives R.L. Henderson and L.M. White were assigned to the case that night, interviewed victims and quickly identified a suspect. A Crime Line tip led them to the second suspect.

The detectives suspected Ashby in other crimes. He was later charged with robbery, abduction and use of the firearm at a convenience store in North Carolina. Two other suspects were charged by North Carolina authorities.

Ashby also was charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of abduction, three counts of using a firearm and one count of auto theft from a robbery in 1994 at a local fast food restaurant.

In an unrelated incident, Ashby was charged with attempted rape, attempted robbery, burglary and use of a firearm from an incident earlier this year on Whittamore Road. Kunta Kason, 19, of the 4100 block of Front Royal Road in Virginia Beach, was charged with rape, robbery and burglary in connection with the same crime. by CNB
