Junius Perry Austin, 79, died Thursday, May 30, 1996, at Hatteras Island medical facility.
Mr. Austin, born in Hatteras, N.C., was a lifelong resident of Ocracoke. He was a retired boatswain's mate with the U.S. Coast Guard, a World War II veteran, and was the caretaker of the Portsmouth Coast Guard Station when it was a hunting and fishing club. He was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, the Ocracoke Masonic Lodge (NU)747, and was a mason for more than 50 years. He was the son of the late Crawford and Inez Gaskins Austin and the widower of the late Marion Forbes Austin.
Mr. Austin is survived by a daughter, June Herring of New Bern, N.C.; two sons, Rudy Austin and Donald Austin, both of Ocracoke; two sisters, Betty Austin of Hatteras and Tressie Mathis of La Mesa, Calif.; a brother, Elwood Austin of Hatteras; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Ocracoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Lovell officiating. Burial with masonic rites will follow in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church today at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras, is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, Ocracoke Assembly of God Church, Ocracoke Rescue Squad or the Ocracoke Masonic Lodge.
