The chairman of The Citadel's governing board says chances are slim that the courts will allow the military college to remain all-male.
``We fought a good fight,'' said Jimmy Jones, a 1958 alumnus of the state-supported college that has battled in court for more than three years to keep women out of its corps of cadets.
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule next month whether Virginia Military Institute may keep its all-male admissions policy. That ruling will affect The Citadel.
Jones told The (Columbia) State for a story Thursday that he's resigned to the likelihood that the Supreme Court will strike down the military schools' admission policies.
``We're ready . . . for females,'' Jones said. ``Of course, we're still hoping (the ruling) goes the other way.''
Already, three women who have applied to The Citadel meet entrance criteria, Jones said.
VMI has prepared no contingency plans for enrolling women, school spokesman Mike Strickland said. VMI's board will meet July 11 to discuss the matter.
