Kempsville split a pair of Group AAA state soccer quarterfinals Thursday at West Springfield.
After both games were delayed two days because of foul weather in northern Virginia, the Chiefs boys took a 2-1 decision over Herndon, while the girls fell 2-0 to Robinson.
That leaves the Cox girls and Kempsville boys carrying the Beach District torch into today's second round at Falls Church High.
The Falcons have never won a state title, but advanced to last year's final four. They face Hylton in a 3 p.m. semifinal today.
Kempsville won back-to-back state boys crowns in 1991 and 1992 and will face Clover Hill in a 6 p.m. semifinal.
Clover Hill (16-2) scored a big quarterfinal upset Tuesday when it defeated Hylton 4-1. Hylton won back-to-back state titles two years ago.
Kempsville (16-3-1) battled Herndon through 76 minutes of scoreless regulation before taking the lead on a blast from just outside the 18-yard box by Adam Schultz.
Herndon had little choice but to push forward, but was burned when Kevin Knott dribbled past three defenders and gave the Chiefs a little breathing room with a smash similar to Schultz's from just inside the box.
Herndon got on the board a little too late when Steve Whalen scored with 20 seconds left.
Robinson played a direct style against the Kempsville girls (14-5-2) and took a 1-0 halftime lead on Megan Hawkins's goal 10 minutes into play. Herndon wouldn't score again until 10 minutes remained, when Katie Ells put things out of reach.
