``MYTH, MAGIC and Mystery: 100 Years of American Children's Book Illustration,'' a new exhibit of 250 original drawings and paintings, opens at the Chrysler Museum of Art Sunday with a visit from the Cat in the Hat and a day of activities for youngsters.
Dr. Seuss' fanciful feline arrives at 1:30 p.m. on a street sweeper. Children are encouraged to come as their favorite storybook characters, and they will be included in a grand procession at which everyone receives a prize.
At 2 p.m. the Hurrah Players will present ``Jack and the Beanstalk'' in the Museum Theater; at 3:15 p.m. a hands-on workshop on storybook portraits will be conducted by Jerry Tompkins, art history specialist for Norfolk Public Schools.

Celebrity readings will be held every Wednesday at 2 p.m. during the run of the exhibition, with the exception of July 3. Author and former WVEC-TV anchor Jim Kincaid kicks off the series this Wednesday.
Loretta Long, who plays Susan on ``Sesame Street,'' hosts readings and self-esteem seminars in the Museum Theater on June 16 at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The Family Fun Movie Series takes place at 1:30 p.m. in the Museum Theater on the following Sundays: July 21, ``Muppet Treasure Island''; July 28, ``Treasure Island'' (the 1934 version with Jackie Cooper and Wallace Beery); Aug. 4, ``Little Women'' (the 1994 version with Winona Ryder); and Aug. 11, ``Little Women'' (the 1933 version with Katherine Hepburn).
Author-illustrator team Gloria Jean Pinkney and Jerry Pinkney conduct workshops on children's book collaboration July 26 and 27. They will also host a special Pajama Party at 6 p.m. July 26. Children are invited to come dressed for a bedtime story, followed by milk and cookies.
The events wind up with a Mad Hatter's Tea Party Sept. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. Wear your favorite hat for cookies, tea and lemonade.
