Anyone who's had a desperately ill child in Hampton Roads knows that Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk is a priceless treasure.
Last year the hospital treated more than 100,000 children suffering from everything from severe birth defects to AIDS, cancer and traumatic injuries.
This weekend is the hospital's annual telethon on WVEC Channel 13. Beginning tonight at 11 and continuing until 8 p.m. Sunday, television personalities will be on the tube asking for your pledge. In the past 13 years the 21-hour telethon has raised $8 million. That money is funneled into new programs, equipment and research.
Much of the telethon will be broadcast live from the hospital lobby. Guaranteed to touch the hearts of viewers will be appearances by patients like Brian Taylor, the 5-year-old Virginia Beach boy who nearly drowned behind his grandmother's house in Lynnhaven Colony last February. Thanks to Children's Hospital, Brian is making a steady recovery and has enrolled in kindergarten for September.
Some segments of the telethon will be part of a national broadcast, because CHKD is part of the Children's Miracle Network - a national group of 161 children's hospitals. However, all pledges called into the telethon from WVEC's viewing area go directly to CHKD.
A more worthwhile cause would be hard to find. Just ask Brian Taylor's family. by CNB
