Charles Harry Murphy

VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles Harry Murphy, of the 5000 block of Oceanfront Avenue, died in his residence on May 29, 1996, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Murphy was the research director of Landmark Communications, Inc., when he retired in 1990 after 35 years with the company.

A native of New York City, Mr. Murphy was a retired reserve Navy commander, having attended the University of South Carolina on an NROTC scholarship. While there, he was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. Professionally, he was a member of the Newspaper Research Council of The American Newspaper Publisher's Association and the American Marketing Association, and he helped found and support local research and marketing groups. He was a past president of the Civitan Club of Norfolk, a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, the Norfolk Toastmasters and a former member of the Norfolk Navy Flying Club.

He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Norfolk, and Epiphany Cathedral of Venice, Florida.

Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Elaine Atchley Murphy; his son, Charles Harry Murphy Jr., a stepdaughter, Rosemary Theresa Heafner; three stepsons, John Thomas Heafner, Patrick Daniel Heafner, and Andrew Robert Heafner; one grandchild; and four step-grandchildren.

There will be a Mass of the Resurrection at Sacred Heart Church in Norfolk at 10 a.m. today with Father Dorgan officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow the mass, with interment at Princess Anne Park off Great Neck Road. The family will receive friends at the church half an hour before the service. .
