Mrs. Sue Sturgis James, 92, widow of the late Vernon Crosley James, died Thursday, May 30, 1996. She was preceeded in death by her only son, Gene Francis James in October, 1995.
Born on the Sturgis Farm near Pungoteague, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Doughty and George William Sturgis.
She attended summer schools at the College of William and Mary and at the University of Virginia. She taught three years in the public schools of Accomack County.
After the tragic drowning death of her husband, she went to work on the Eastern Shore for North American Insurance Co., Richmond, in their accident department.
The Wesleyan Guild at Epworth Methodist Church chose her as Woman of the Year in 1963 for her long service to the Guild as a Charter Member since 1945 and for her contribution to the community.
In 1975, she received the Woman of the Year Award from Soroptimist International of Northampton County for outstanding achievement in community affairs.
In 1989, she received an American Flag from Governor Baliles in recognition of her 29 years of service to the County of Northampton as an Officer of Election in the Exmore precinct.
She was a volunteer at NAM Hospital serving 1000 hours as a Pink Lady. She was active in the Auxiliary of the Exmore Fire Co. and had done volunteer work for the Red Cross.
She is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. Carroll Taylor; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn James of Seaford, Del.; and 12 neices and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 Sunday at the Epworth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tammy Estep. Interment will be in the Onancock Cemetery. Family will join friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore.
