THE ALL-BEACH DISTRICT Boys Soccer team this year reflects the kind of parity seen on the field as seven of the 10 schools placed players on the first team, as selected by district coaches.
No team got more than two players on the first team.
District champion Kellam led the selections with five first- and second-team players. Kempsville had four and First Colonial had three.
The coach of the year is Kellam's Don Hart. The Knights won their first district and region title this season before falling to Fairfax in the state quarterfinals.
Adam Schultz of Kempsville was voted the district's player of the year.
The junior midfielder is joined on the first team by fellow Chief Kevin Knott. Kellam's first-teamers are Peter Andersen and Chris Phelan. First Colonial is represented by Joey Broscious and Corey Fogle.
Rounding out the first team are Charles Cowden and Mark McMullen of Green Run, David Lowery and Gordon Peters of Cox, Josh Morgan of Salem and Todd White of Princess Anne.
Schultz is a repeat first-teamer - one of only two - and is the key to the Chiefs' attack. He is, according to coach Kevin Denson, willing to take chances to make things happen and is a fierce competitor. Heading into Thursday's Group AAA quarterfinal against Herndon, he had nine goals and seven assists. He is also a member of the Olympic Development Program Region I team.
Knott - one of the Chiefs' three national ODP pool team members - also played on the U.S. Youth Soccer Association's U-17 World Cup team. The junior forward had a team-leading 11 goals and three assists going into Thursday's game.
A senior midfielder, Andersen is the Knights' leading scorer with 12 goals and 10 assists. Phelan moved up from the honorable mention team and the senior sweeper made a name for himself with a flip-throw restart that netted two goals and two assists the past two years.
Lowery was the Falcons' mainstay on defense, using an incredible ability in the air to win 50/50 balls. He also came forward on set plays and scored twice on headers.
Peters finished with 13 goals for Cox and scored in seven district games. In the two district games in which he came up empty, Peters played 10 minutes against First Colonial and did not play against Princess Anne.
Fogle, a senior keeper, finished with a .77 goals-against average and had four district shutouts. He stopped 75 percent of penalty kicks he faced and coach Joe Tucei said his team probably would have lost four or five more games without him. Fogle was on last year's second team.
A senior midfielder, Broscious is the other first-team repeater. He had six goals - including a pair of game-winners and one that tied a match - and four assists. He has been selected to play in the Virginia High School League All-Star game.
McMullen ran the show as a junior midfielder for the Stallions and had three goals and three assists in district play.
Although Cowden had a 1.76 goals-against average, he is credited with saving the Stallions from extremely lopsided results.
Morgan moved up from last year's second team and was among the Sun Devils' leading scorers with six goals and a pair of assists.
