NANSEMOND RIVER EARNS 5 SPOTS ON ALL-DISTRICT TEAM

Nansemond River softball players earned five spots on the All-Bay Rivers District team, voted on by coaches last week.

Seniors Heather Behrends, Kari Harrell, LaToya Crocker and Chrissy Mims were joined on the first team by sophomore Kim Tribble.

The Warriors finished second in the regular season standings before being upset by York in the first round of the district tournament.

Behrends, who earned first team all-state honors last year at third base, hit .493 with 32 RBIs during the regular season and did not strike out in more than 70 at-bats. Harrell (.492) and Crocker (.484) anchored Nansemond River's outfield, while Tribble (.469) played first base.

Harrell scored 45 runs with 34 stolen bases and had a .909 slugging percentage. Tribble replaced all-district and all-region standout Angie Gatling, who was injured before the season started. Tribble had just three errors for a .988 fielding percentage. Mims was 7-5 with a 2.12 ERA during the regular season, striking out 51 and walking 27.

Poquoson, which went undefeated during the regular season, also earned five spots on the first team: sophomore second baseman Tammi Perok, junior shortstop Jennifer Davison, senior outfielder Peggy Cross, senior pitcher Leslie Inge and sophomore designated hitter Jamie Douglas. York's Kelly Sambuchi, a senior catcher, and Kelly Roznoski, a freshman utility player, rounded out the first team.

Inge was named player of the year, and Poquoson's Ed Spain was awarded coach of the year.

Area players on the second team were: Laura Gray, a senior outfielder from Southampton, and Jennifer Shannon, a freshman utility player for Nansemond River.
