VIRGINIA C. PATTERSON

Virginia C. Patterson

WILLIAMSBURG - Virginia Lee Curtis Patterson died Wednesday evening, May 29, 1996, at home.

She is survived by Capt. Joseph Patterson Jr., U.S. Navy (Ret.), her husband of 50 years; three daughters, Shannon McCall, wife of Dr. W.J. McCall Jr. of Hampton, Linda Butler, wife of Mark Butler of Albuquerque, N.M., and Holly Patterson of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three grandchildren, Caitlin McCall of Alexandria and Meghan McCall and Kyle McCall of Hampton; her brother, Neville Curtis of Dayton, Ore.; and her aunt, Bernice Lovitt of Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her grandson, Connor Ryan McCall of Hampton.

Gin was a 1943 graduate of The College of William and Mary, inducted into the Old Guard in 1993. She was her college class reporter for 28 years, always beginning her column with ``Greetings from the gentle city.'' During World War II, she was a cryptanalyst with the Army Signal Corps, doing her share to help us win the war. She taught elementary school at several of her husband's duty stations. She continued her interest in education by teaching in Adult Skills Program locally. She was a costumed historical interpreter for 14 wonderful years with Colonial Williamsburg. She was a past president of the local Chapter of AAUW, and past treasurer of The Rose and Thistle Chapter of the Embroiderer's Guild of America, and a member of The Williamsburg Doll Club. She was a member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church. She had a breezy familiarity with the world through her travels with Joe, and was ``glad that for this last journey, she didn't have to pack.''

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Williamsburg United Methodist Church by the Rev. Douglas Wilson. Arrangements are being handled by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society in the memory of Virginia Patterson.
