OUTER BANKS TO HOST GOV. HUNT ON FRIDAY

Democratic Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. will make a swing through the Outer Banks on business and pleasure Friday, talking with Dare County teachers, shaking hands with voters of all persuasions and watching the 56th edition of ``The Lost Colony'' outdoor drama on Roanoke Island.

Campaigning for re-election, Hunt will fly into the Dare County airport near Manteo and then reiterate his support for more money for schools and teachers' salaries at a 2:30 p.m. meeting at Manteo Middle School.

Hunt has made education a major plank in his campaign platform in his statewide duel with Republican challenger Robin Hayes, and will discuss his plans and answer questions from Outer Banks teachers.

Hunt, accompanied by Senate leader Marc Basnight of Manteo, will press the flesh with Democrats - and anyone else - at a free fish fry and barbecue under a white tent near the Windmill Point Restaurant in Nags Head from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

``Everyone - even Republicans - is welcome. And we decided not to charge so people who wanted to meet the governor could do so without cost,'' said R.V. Owens III, Hunt's fund-raiser and campaign director in northeast North Carolina.

``We don't know how many to expect. But there will be food and music and fun for everybody.''

At 8:30 p.m., Hunt and others in his party will see the 1996 version of the long-running outdoor drama, ``The Lost Colony,'' which opens the season for Dare residents Wednesday night. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
