Kempsville's Adrienne Parker was not a happy camper in the girls 1,600.
The Eastern Region meet record holder hoped the state meet would be run it two sections. But instead, all the competitors were crammed in one race. Parker had to fight her way through through a talented pack led by three Centreville runners, but still finished fourth in 5:04.77.
``I'm a little disappointed we were all packed in,'' Parker said. ``As a result it was a little hard getting out at the start of the race.''
MAKING THE GRADE: Being a member of the state championship 4x100 relay team wasn't the only reason Green Run's Cedric Warren was all smiles Saturday. Warren, who signed a football grant-in-aid with the Univerisity of Florida in February, learned he'd scored a 970 on the SAT, meaning he will be eligible to play for the Gators as a freshman. The score was 130 points higher than Warren needed, and 210 points higher than his previous best.
BAD FALL: Norcom's Brandi Smith was on pace for a top-three finish in the 300 hurdles when she caught her foot on the third obstacle and tumbled onto the track. Smith, who had posted her personal best in a qualifying heat Friday, was in tears as she was helped off the track, but coach Vincent Pugh said cuts and bruises were the only physical damage.
``I think her pride's hurt more than anything else,'' Pugh said. ``Brandi was running as well as she's run all season, and I think she just got a little too excited.''
I'LL TAKE SECOND: After a third-place finish a year ago, winning a state championship was the goal for Norcom shotputter Missy Banks. But after a disappointing heave a week ago in the Eastern Region meet, Banks was content to finish second.
``Today I had my confidence back,'' said Banks, whose 43-foot toss was nearly 5 feet better than her regional-winning heave. by CNB
