Regarding your front-page report on State Prisons Director Ron Angelone (May 20): 23 cheers for Angelone; 33 cheers for Governor Allen, who brought him in!
It is encouraging - no, exciting - that at last Virginia's criminals are being incarcerated and treated as criminals, which is what they are.
These criminals have been caught by our tax-funded police (who put their lives on the line every day). They have been tried by our tax-funded court system (represented in many cases by tax-funded attorneys). They have been found guilty and sent to our tax-funded prisons.
Are we saying our police force and our court system's efforts are a farce - put criminals in prison; pat them on the head; allow them to have lovers in private rooms; let them have TVs, special food); let them call the shots? That is not the message we should be sending convicted criminals in Virginia, or any other state.
