Elizabeth R. Sprague

WAVERLY - Elizabeth Moss Rogers Sprague died May 31, 1996, after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Sprague was the widow of Air Force Maj. Gen. John T. Sprague and the daughter of the late State Senator and Sussex County Treasurer William Oliver Rogers and the late Annie Sue Moss Rogers. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Frances Rogers Hartz of Waverly.

She is survived by a son, Col. John T. Sprague Jr., U.S. Army (ret.); a daughter-in-law, Betty B. Sprague; five grandchildren, Susan Whatley, Steven Sprague, Sara Sprague, Sharon Callis, Sandra Blackburn; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Born in Disputanta on March 2, 1902, she was a resident of Waverly for many years. She was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College and served as a public school teacher in Hampton during her early years. Active in numerous civic, social and religious activities, she was a member and former trustee of the Waverly United Methodist Church and a member of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.

A memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 1996, at the Waverly United Methodist Church by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Phillips K. Foote, U.S. Air Force (ret.), and the Rev. Mrs. Pat Tony. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery on June 6, 1996, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial donations be made to Waverly United Methodist Church or the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is in charge of the arrangements.
