MARIE S. MOFFETT

Marie Spence Moffett, 86, died June 3, 1996, in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Moffett was the wife of Rear Admiral William A. Moffett Jr., U.S. Navy retired, of Virginia Beach.

Born in South Mills, N.C., Mrs. Moffett was the daughter of John A. Spence and Mittie Marcelle Spence, long time Norfolk residents. Mrs. Moffett graduated from Maury High School in 1927 and attended the College of William and Mary and the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. From 1950 to 1954, she served with the U.S. Army Special Services Division as a director of a service club in Yokohama, Japan.

Mrs. Moffett is survived by her husband; a niece, Joan Simpson Jones of Concord, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Spence; and two nephews, Ryan Zash and Curtis Roan Blouin, all of Aptos, Calif.; a first cousin, Jane Mercer Charters of Norfolk; a stepson, Col., U.S. Marine Corp, William A. Moffett III, and his children, William Adger Moffett IV, Hilary Moffett, Meredith Moffett and Alexander Moffett, all of Alexandria, Va.

Mrs. Moffett was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Virginia Beach, where she served a term as elder. She was active in work at The Chrysler Museum, various garden clubs and many philanthropic and welfare organizations in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. For approximately five years she was director of the Bible School at Norfolk First Presbyterian Church and secretary of that church.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach on Thursday, June 13, 1996, at 3 p.m. The officiating clergy will be the Rev. Allen Johnson, Dr. J. Scottie Griffin and Dr. William F. Summers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions made to Barium Springs Home For Children, P.O. Box 1, Barium Springs, N.C. 28010. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments provided information.
