ALL-DISTRICT TEAM MIRRORS THE REGULAR SEASON

THE ALL-EASTERN District girls soccer team, selected by the coaches, was a bit like the regular season. Regular-season champ Maury dominated the selections, and district tournament winner Granby was a close second.

Maury, which went 8-0 in district play and lost to Kempsville in the Eastern Region quarterfinals, had six players represented on the first team and four on the second team.

The Commodores' first-teamers are Katie Roman, named the district player of the year, Amy Mayer, Shwante Snead, Mary Lee McLaughlin, Colleen Maloney and Sarah Eppler.

Roman, Mayer, Snead, McLaughlin, Maloney and Granby's Christina Sarvis are all repeat selections from last year.

McLaughlin and Roman, both senior fullbacks, were chosen for their leadership abilities and smart defensive play, said coach Bob Mayer. Roman has accepted a scholarship to play at George Washington University next season.

Keeper Maloney, a junior, did not allow a goal from any district opponent, and Mayer calls Eppler, at 5-foot-3, one of the smallest but most aggressive backs he has seen.

``She'll knock you down in a heartbeat,'' he said. Eppler made second team last season.

Forwards Amy Mayer and Snead led the Commodores offensively. Mayer had 18 goals and 14 assists. Snead, who also ran track for Maury and plans to attend Virginia Tech, finished with 16 goals.

Granby, which lost to Cox in the Eastern Region quarterfinals, put Sarvis, Angela Tumminelli and Natalie Weatherburn on the first team. Tumminelli, a junior who moved up from the second team, led the Comets in scoring with 13 goals and six assists. Junior sweeper Sarvis and junior keeper Weatherburn anchored the defense, which produced 11 shutouts, and Sarvis added two goals. The three led the Comets to the most regular-season wins (10) in school history.

Lake Taylor was represented by Sook Kam; Booker T. Washington by Sherika Sadler and Leslie Evidente; and Norview by Kim Fair.

Titans coach Amy Harrell describes Kam as ``an excellent defender who helped out the goalie and the other defenders. She is very dedicated and a good role model.''

Fair finished her second season as a team captain at Norview. The senior fullback also plays volleyball and basketball, and coach Don Lyons lauds her dedication and intensity. ``She takes the rules of play to their limit,'' he said. ``She's willing to sacrifice her body with reckless abandon.''

Evidente, a sophomore keeper on last year's second team, led the Bookers with four shutouts, and Sadler, a first-teamer for field hockey who also wrestled, played everywhere, said coach Mary Lib. The junior roles included forward, sweeper, wing back and midfielder. ILLUSTRATION: EASTERN DISTRICT GIRLS SOCCER
