CAPERTON GRABS SHARE OF REGION'S PLAYER OF YEAR HONOR

Nansemond River shortstop J.C. Caperton shared Region I player of the year honors with outfielder Mike Medley of Matoaca.

Caperton, a senior shortstop, batted .424 with 20 stolen bases during the regular season and set a single-season school record with six home runs.

Chip Runyon, a sophomore outfielder, and Grayson Craun, a senior designated hitter, joined Caperton on the first team for Nansemond River, which played Western Albemarle in a Group AA state quarterfinal Tuesday.

Southampton placed four players on the region first-team: senior first baseman William Brown (.454, 31 RBIs), senior second baseman Brad Davis (.381, 19 stolen bases), senior pitcher William Jones (8-2) and junior utility player Durane Parker (.516).

Matoaca's Steven McLeod (pitcher) and Eric Griffin (outfield), Brunswick catcher Leeman Hunter and York's Chris Genthrup (third base) were also named to the first team.

Matoaca's Grant Odell earned coach of the year honors.

Lakeland's Geoff Williams (catcher), Nansemond River's Craun (pitcher), John Drames (outfield) and Southampton's Larry Woodley (outfield) were named to the second team.

REGION I SOFTBALL: Nansemond River's Kim Tribble, Heather Behrends and Kari Harrell earned first team all-region honors in softball.

Tribble hit .469 as a first baseman, while Behrends (.493) was named at third base and Harrell (.492) as an outfielder.

Poquoson's Leslie Inge, a pitcher, earned Region I player of the year.

Nansemond River's Chrissy Mims (pitcher) and LaToya Crocker (outfield) were named to the second team.

ALL-TCIS LACROSSE: Nansemond-Suffolk Academy placed three players - Nick Garbarino, Tom Oast and Justin Verdirame - on the Tidewater Conference of Independence Schools lacrosse first team.

Will Rountree (Cape Henry), Campbell Delk (Hampton Roads), Matt Daneigers (Cape Henry), Tommy Martin (Hampton Roads), Scott Meredith (Cape Henry), Todd Feldman (Cape Henry) and Mike Sachon (Catholic) rounded out the first team.

N-SA's Trey Parker and Garrett McGehee earned honorable mention. by CNB
