On Monday, June 3, 1996, Alice Otelia Boyd Parker quietly and peacefully departed this life for a better one with our heavenly Father. Mrs. Parker, 67, of the 1300 block of Mount Vernon Ave., died in Hillhaven Rehabilitation Center, Virginia Beach.
She was born in Portsmouth on Sept. 24, 1928, to the late Deacon Paul and Deaconess Lois Boyd, who provided a loving and caring home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Parker Sr.
Alice was educated in the Portsmouth Public School System. She graduated from I.C. Norcom High School in 1946. She continued her education in the field of data processing at Tidewater Community College.
Her loving nature was an inspiration to her family and friends. In addition to nurturing her family, Alice was a community activist and volunteer. As a community activist, she played an integral part in the development of PAC (Project Area Committee) and the Mt. Hermon Community League, now known as the Mount Hermon Improvement Foundation, Inc. She also served on the executive board of the foundation. She volunteered her services to Maryview Hospital, SEVAMP, Head Start and numerous school PTAs.
Her most recent employment was with the Portsmouth Public Library as an Outreach Coordinator. Alice spent countless hours visiting the convalescent and assisting in locating housing for the handicapped and disabled. Alice was a member of Celestial Baptist Church where she served as a missionary and Jolly Worker.
She is survived by seven children, Sylvia Y. Parker, Phyllis D. Parker-Clemons, Margaret A. Parker-Hall and Alan B. Parker, all of Portsmouth, Joseph E. Parker Jr. of Fairfax, Va., Wanda E. King of Marlton, N.J. and Wilbur L. Parker of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren, two sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law. She is also survived by her sister, Pauline B. Williams of Portsmouth, and three brothers, Edwin M. Boyd of Philadelphia, and Bernard Boyd and Paul Boyd, both of Portsmouth; and numerous nieces and nephews and many other devoted relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will begin at noon today at Corprew Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Friday. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
