SUSPECT CHARGED IN STRING OF ROBBERIES

A man linked to a series of robberies was arrested Tuesday night after he was suspected of robbing another store, police spokesman Larry Hill said.

Charles W. Harrell, a homeless man from Virginia Beach, was arrested at 6:16 p.m. Tuesday at the Wal-Mart store in the 1100 block of N. Military Highway, where he was hiding after allegedly robbing the Hofheimer's shoe store at Janaf Shopping Center, police said.

The clerk told police Harrell, 33, came into the store and tried on several pairs of shoes before he approached the counter with his hand under his shirt, implying he had a weapon. He left with cash and a pair of boots, police said.

Police believe he is the same man wanted in connection with three robberies in Norfolk and two in Virginia Beach that occurred since Friday. The robber implied he had a weapon in each case.

In Norfolk, Harrell is suspected of robbing the B & L Food Mart in the 6500 block of Virginia Beach Blvd. and the Exxon service station in the 1400 block of N. Military Highway. Harrell, who had no listed address, was charged Tuesday night with three counts of robbery. The other robbery cases are under investigation.
