CHARLES P. LEAVITT

Charles Paul Leavitt, 93, of the 5900 block of Studeley Ave., a retired registered professional engineer, died June 6, 1996, in his residence.

Mr. Leavitt was a native of the Ukraine. He came to the United States at the age of 10, and his family settled in Chicago where he grew up, married and raised his family. He later moved to Washington, D.C., to work as the East Coast coordinator for Capehart Military Housing. He later was transferred to the Naval Mine Depot in Yorktown and in 1945 to Norfolk as the director of the housing division for the Atlantic Division of the Bureau of Yard and Docks where he retired after 25 years of federal service. Following his retirement in 1964, he participated in his son's architectural firm of Leavitt Associates as a consulting engineer until his retirement in 1990. He was most proud of the time he donated to design and erect Congregation Beth El, and Temple Emmanuel Synagogues, and with his son Temple Israel. Mr Leavitt designed the Commodore Levy Chapel at the Norfolk Naval Base and the Jewish Chapel of the Hampton Veterans Administration Hospital, which was dedicated in memory of his grandson David Ari Leavitt.

He was the recent widower of Sadie Joseph Leavitt, his wife of 75 years. He was a member and honorary vice president of Congregation Beth El in Norfolk. Mr. Leavitt was a 32nd Degree Mason. Also he was a member of the Norfolk Shrine, National Society of Professional Engineers, Society of American Military Engineers, and Engineers Club of Hampton Roads.

Survivors include a daughter, Harriet Goldenberg and her husband, Jerome, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a son, Sheldon Leavitt and his wife, Marian, of Norfolk; five grandchildren, Charles Hecht-Leavitt and his wife, Leslie, of Norfolk, Jonathan Kahn-Leavitt and his wife, Laura, of Watertown, Mass., Shirra Leavitt of Santa Monica, Calif., Debora Goldenberg, Stuart Goldenberg and his wife, Carol, all of West Palm Beach; and five great-grandchildren, Zachary and Lily Hecht-Leavitt, Anna and Nathaniel Kahn-Leavitt and Reed Goldenberg.

A chapel service will be conducted at noon Sunday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg and Cantor Jacob Tessler. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Sheldon and Marian Leavitt, Botetourt Gardens, Sunday afternoon following the services from 1 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Family Services of Tidewater or a charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
