A pedestrian who was struck by a taxi when he tried to cross Route 158 shortly before midnight Wednesday remained in stable condition Thursday evening at Norfolk Sentara Hospital, where he was treated for internal injuries, police said.
Marc Bergeron, 21, from Tolland, Conn., was on the bypass road near the Atlantis Bar and Bistro when he was struck by an Island Taxi, Police Chief Charles Cameron said.
The left front of the 1983 Ford struck Bergeron, Cameron said. The cab was driven by Lynn M. Mallory, 20, of Kill Devil Hills. She was not charged.
Tom Newsom of Salvo was sitting across the road at the Whalebone Surf Shop at the time of the accident.
``The cab driver tried to swerve to avoid him, but she couldn't really snatch it over to get over because there was a car behind her,'' he said. ``The guy was hit on the side and then flipped over the car.''
The cab was not speeding at the time of the accident, and rainfall earlier in the evening did not affect driving conditions, the police chief said. Bergeron had been drinking before the accident, Cameron added.
Paramedics took Bergeron by ambulance to the Outer Banks Medical Center. He was flown by helicopter to the Sentara Norfolk General Hospitaltrauma unit, officials at the medical center said early Thursday.
``Pedestrian accidents are rare in the town of Nags Head,'' Cameron said. This was the first such accident in 18 months.
The investigation is continuing, Cameron said.
