Although police have been on the lookout, no more carefully wrapped packages of cocaine have washed up on Outer Banks beaches since four bags were discovered by tourists last weekend.
Four kilograms of cocaine were turned in Friday and Saturday by visitors to the Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head police departments. The four separate packages, weighing approximately 2.2 pounds each, were wrapped tightly in plastic tape and enclosed in waterproof bags.
Police estimate the street value of each bag at about $100,000.
Lt. Bill Walker of the Kill Devil Hills Police Department said Thursday that investigators kept a close eye on the tides following the discoveries, but no more packages appeared.
Walker said the investigation has been turned over to U.S Customs agents. He added that officers are watching area beaches for any additional packages.
``We definitely want to keep it out the hands of the public, if we can,'' he said.
One person turned in a bag to Kill Devil Hills police on Friday afternoon, and another turned one in Saturday morning.
Nags Head Police Chief Charles Cameron said a bag was recovered Friday at 7 p.m. by an Ahoskie woman at the Bonnet Street beach access in Nags Head. He said police have no suspects, but the investigation is continuing.
