Three more flag officer moves for the Navy have been announced, with the commands changing for both the 5th Fleet in the Persian Gulf and 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.
President Clinton forwarded the nominations to the Senate on Wednesday.
They are:
Vice Adm. John S. Redd, 51, commander U.S. naval forces, Central Command and commander of the U.S. 5th Fleet in Bahrain, to be assigned to the Pentagon as director, strategic plans and policy on the Joint Staff.
Vice Adm. Donald L. Pilling, 53, commander U.S. 6th Fleet and commander naval striking and support forces, Southern Europe, to be assigned as deputy chief of naval operations for resources, warfare requirements and assessments at the Pentagon. That post is being vacated by Vice Adm. Thomas J. Lopez, whose nomination for promotion to admiral was announced earlier. Lopez is to become commander of U.S. naval and allied forces in Southern Europe, replacing Adm. Leighton W. Smith Jr., who is retiring.
Rear Adm. Charles S. Abbot, 51, director J-3, European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, to be promoted to the three-star rank of vice admiral and assigned to Pilling's post as 6th Fleet commander in Gaeta, Italy. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
