Hampton Roads and Virginia unemployment rates remained the same in April, the Virginia Employment Commission said Friday.
Normally unemployment drops from March to April, said William F. Mezger, senior economist at the Virginia Employment Commission.
But traditional temporary furloughs in textile and apparel industries prevented April's unemployment rate from falling lower, particularly in some parts of South Hampton Roads. The Easter holiday, the period when the furloughs occur, came at the beginning of the month's reference period. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic by Virginian-Pilot
