You recently printed articles detailing a proposed values-education curriculum for Norfolk public schools.
Another project, the Community of Caring Program, has operated for the past three years at two Norfolk sites, Granby High School and Northside Middle School.
Under the auspices of the Kennedy Foundation and funded locally by Colonial Chevrolet, this program has helped the students and staffs of these two schools to engage in character-building activities that instill the values all people need to succeed.
Whether our students helped the watermen on the Chesapeake Bay or ``hugged'' their school to promote unity while solving a math problem, they benefited tremendously from the values of responsibility, respect, caring, trust and family.
Now that all Norfolk city schools will be participants in the new program, we are grateful to our former sponsors, D. E. Williams of Colonial Chevrolet and Joshua Darden, who first saw the need to promote values education in the public schools, for their outstanding contributions to the Community of Caring Program.
Community partnerships are essential for our schools to survive. These fine gentlemen recognized this need and helped many young people to achieve a quality of life necessary for success.
