SLIP INTO SOMETHING FRESH, COMFORTABLE AND FORM-FITTING

WHAT'S THIS? A slipcover that doesn't slip and slide?

This spring Sure Fit introduced a ready-made, one-piece slipcover that goes on with ease but stays put with authority, much like a custom-made cover. An elastic ``waistband'' is the secret of these semi-fitted covers, which come in chair, love seat and sofa sizes.

And while they come in the neutrals that Grandma's slipcovers did, these updated versions are also available in a variety of sophisticated colors, patterns and textures. From regal floral and tapestry to casual seersucker and corduroy, there is a match for every home-decorating mood.

Prices vary according to size and fabric, with chair covers starting at about $60 and sofa covers topping out at about $190. The Sure Fit one-piece carries the Fieldcrest and Cannon brand names and is available at Hills and Bradlees department stores, Linens 'N Things and through the Domestications catalog (800-746-2555). DON'T GET HUNG UP

If you'd like to display artwork but would rather not fill the wall with nail holes, try these alternatives suggested in the Orange County Register:<

Construct a simple wall shelf from decorative molding and prop pictures on it.

Or prop a framed picture on a plain wood-backed chair. EASY COLOR IN A CAN

Want to feel like a kid with a new pack of crayons? Buy yourself a couple of cans of the first-ever latex enamel spray paint and get ready to have some fun. Krylon Living Color aerosol paints, in 25 shades from neutral to knock-out, make redecorating as easy as A-B-C.

The new paints, available for about $5 a can in paint and home-improvement stores, have little odor, are scratch resistant, won't yellow and clean up with soap and water, says the manufacturer, Diversified Brands, which is a Sherwin-Williams company.

Suited for indoor and outdoor use, the paint will work on wood, wicker, metal, plastic, clay, plaster, ever papier-mache and craft foam.

Use it to redo kitchen chairs, add bright touches to a child's room, match a wicker basket to room decor, stencil a throw pillow or rug. And much more.

For a rainbow of project ideas, you might want to check out the manufacturer's booklet, ``Decorating with Color.'' Call (800) 4-KRYLON for a free copy. HISTORIC HOME AWARDS

If you have restored or rehabilitated a historic home within the past five years, you may be eligible to enter the 1997 Great American Home Awards contest.

Sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and by Kohler Co., a manufacturer of plumbing fixtures, the awards program was established in 1989 to recognize homeowners who have helped keep America's heritage alive through house preservation.

Categories include exterior, interior, addition, landscape and bed-and-breakfast. Houses must be at least 50 years old and must have been designed and functioning as single-family homes or bed-and-breakfasts. Deadline is Sept. 30.

For information and entry forms, write Great American Home Awards, National Trust, 1785 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036 or call (202) 673-4283. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
