John Wilbur Mountjoy, 78, died at DePaul Hospital, Norfolk, June 7, 1996.
He was a lifetime resident of Smithfield. Mr. Mountjoy was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Aircorps in India and Burma. He was employed with Gwaltney of Smithfield, where he retired in 1981 with 24 years of service. After retirement he enjoyed a second career as a popular docent at historic St. Luke's Church. He was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church and served as Sunday school superintendent.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Virginia C. Mountjoy; a son, W. Eugene Mountjoy; a sister, Daisy M. Gwaltney, all of Smithfield; a brother, James Walter Mountjoy of Ocean Springs, Miss.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield, with the Rev. John R. Jones officiating. The family will receive friends today from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, and suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the St. Luke's Scholarship Fund, 14477 Benn's Church Blvd., Smithfield, the Bethany United Methodist Church, 318 Main St., Smithfield, Va. 23430, or the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, Va. 22314.
