Elmo Hawkins, 80, of the 1300 block of Five Forks Road, died June 7, 1996, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.
He was born in Lee City, Ky. and grew up in Middletown, Ohio. He was the son of Moses H. Hawkins and Nora B. Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins became a resident of Norfolk after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1939.
Mr. Hawkins was a retired insurance executive with the Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Co. He established the Elmo Hawkins Insurance Agency in 1950. He served as agency president until his retirement in 1990.
Mr. Hawkins was a member of Gateway Freewill Baptist Church. He was also an active member of the Easy Does It Club for 32 years. He was a former member of the Cavalier Yacht and Country Club, and he continued to play golf throughout his life.
Mr. Hawkins was an active supporter of the city of Norfolk's Community League football program. He was the head coach of two teams that won city championships. He was a former member of the Norfolk Exchange Club, the Norfolk Life Underwriters Association, and the Norfolk Checker and Chess Club.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie R. Hawkins; a son, Robert E. Hawkins of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Betty L. Wallace and her husband, John W. Wallace, Demarias E. LeForce and her husband, Willis D. LeForce, and a brother, James E. Hawkins, all of Middletown, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Dorothy E. Sachs and her husband, Norman R. Sachs of Hayes, Va. Mr. Hawkins had three grandchildren, Robert E. Phillips of Baltimore, Md., H. Ford McArver and his wife, Elisabeth A. McArver of Louisville, Ky. and Jane Ashley Lambert and her husband, Kyle M. Lambert of Ft. Worth, Texas.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, Virginia Beach, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home by Pastor Fritz Stegeman of the Open Door Chapel and the Pastor Karl Sexton of Gateway Freewill Baptist Church. The burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park. A reception for family and friends will be held at Gateway Freewill Baptist Church, 5473 Virginia Beach Blvd., immediately following the burial service.
