A 39-year-old Newport News man remained missing Saturday after state police said he was seen jumping from a bridge after a hit-and-run accident.
Just before 5 p.m. Friday, there was a minor accident on Interstate 64 west, just short of the final bridge span leading to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. The driver who caused the accident drove off.
The driver stopped at an emergency pull-off on the southwest bridge leading to the westbound tube of the bridge-tunnel. The man scaled a wall and jumped, witnesses said.
Rescue boats searched the area and nearby waters in Willoughby Bay, but found no sign of him.
State police identified the man as Kelson Fisher, 39, of Newport News, a sailor stationed aboard the carrier John C. Stennis.
Anyone with information about Fisher or the accident is asked to call state police at 424-6800.
