Alexander Lum Martone, D.D.S., MScs., 83, of the 7400 block of North Shore Road, died June 6, 1996, at his home.
He was born in Asheville, N.C., the son of Georgia and Peter Martone, and husband of Joan Dalis Martone. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk.
Dr. Martone was a co-founder of The Dental Hygiene Clinic of Old Dominion University and was a former adjunct professor at Old Dominion University. He was a graduate of William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Medical College of Virginia, School of Dentistry, and received his Masters Degree in Prosthodontics from Ohio State University.
He was diplomate of The American Academy of Prosthodontics, diplomate of The American Society of Osseointegration, diplomate of The Academy of Advanced Oral Reconstruction and Esthetics, diplomate of The International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and diplomate of The International College of Dentist. Dr. Martone was a fellow in The Academy of Denture Prosthetics, fellow, American College of Dentists, fellow, American Equilibration Society, fellow, Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics, fellow, American College of Dentists, fellow, Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontics, fellow, Virginia State Dental Association, fellow, Pierre Fauchard Academy, past-president of The Virginia Dental Association, past-president of The Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontics, past-president of The Virginia Board of Dentistry, past-president, Medical College of Virginia Alumni Association, past-president, Carl O. Boucher Prosthodontic Conference, past-president, Tidewater Dental Association, past-president, PSI Omega-Gamma Omicron Society, past-president, Academy of Denture Prosthetics, a member of The American Dental Association, The American Prosthodontic Society, The International Association for Dental Research, Federation Dentaire International, Cleft Palate Association, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
Dr. Martone was a member of The House of Delegates of The American Dental Association for 21 years and was president of The Virginia State Board of Dentistry for 11 years, resigning that position to accept the nomination for president of The American Dental Association.
He was past-chairman of The Council of Dental Laboratory Relations, past-chairman of The Reference Committee on Rules and Order, a member of The Reference Committee on Dental Education, a commissioner of The American Dental Association on Accreditation of Dental Laboratories and an advisor to The Batelle Memorial Institute Research Study, Commissioner of The Certification of Dental Laboratories, and a member of The Inter-Agency Committee on Dental Auxiliaries.
Dr. Martone was a consultant to The Office of The Surgeon General, United States Air Force, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, U.S. Navy, consultant to The National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. He was a consultant to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, DePaul Hospital, Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Kecoughtan Hospital, Public Health Hospital, Norfolk, and to Langley Air Force Base, Langley, Va.
Dr. Martone held staff appointments at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, DePaul Hospital, and Leigh Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Board of Directors of The Norfolk Medical Tower.
Dr. Martone was a former professor in the Department of Anatomy, The Medical College of Virginia, School of Dentistry. He was an instructor of Prosthodontics at Gunter Air Force Base, School of Aviation Medicine, while serving as a major in The Dental Corps of The U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Dr. Martone conducted research projects in dentistry at Ohio State University's School of Dentistry, The Medical College of Virginia, School of Dentistry and at Eastman Dental Dispensary, Rochester, N.Y., and his papers were published in Dental and Scientific Journals. He has lectured throughout the United States and foreign countries and was the founder of the first Prosthodontic Society in South Africa.
He was a past-member of The Editorial Council and a past-associate editor of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and a consultant to The Journal of The American Dental Association.
He built the first shopping center in Norfolk, Midtown Shopping at Ward's Corner in 1946.
He was a member of The Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and a former member of the Norfolk Rotary Club.
Dr. Martone is survived by his wife of 22 years, Joan Dalis Martone; three sons, Peter W. Martone, Joseph C. Martone, Alexander Martone; and a daughter, Sharon Nelson; and a brother, Leo J. Martone; 12 grandchildren; and nephews, Joseph D. Martone, Michael H. Norment and Matthew R. Norment.
A funeral service will be conducted today, June 10, 1996 at 2 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, by Father Julian B. Goodman and Rabbi Lawrence A. Forman. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
