LIGHTS GO OUT

About 13,000 Virginia Power customers were left in the dark about 8:15 p.m. Sunday when a utility substation failed.

The outage affected the Wards Corner area, including DePaul Medical Center, which stopped accepting emergency-room patients because of the blackout. Essential medical services were being handled by an emergency generator.

Also affected were Lafayette Shores, some areas along Tidewater Drive and parts of Ocean View.

A utility-company spokesman said the problem occurred at the Thole Street substation and that technicians were working to switch affected customers to other circuits until repairs could be made.

All service was expected to be restored by midnight. by CNB
