James L. Landreth Sr., 70, of the 400 block of Major Andre Ave., died June 10, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
He retired as a senior chief petty officer of the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service. He also retired from Nations-Bank after 20 years in Property Management. Born in Bethalto, Ill., he was a member and coordinator of the Altar Service of Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea; Goodwill Ambassador for the City of Virginia Beach; president of the Pembroke Elementary School PTA for two terms; active in the Aragona-Pembroke Recreational League as treasurer and flag football commissioner for 12 years.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude D. ``Windy'' Landreth; a daughter, Renee M. Landreth of Virginia Beach; seven sons, James L. Landreth Jr., Dean C. Landreth, Alan S. Landreth, Michael S. Landreth, Brian K. Landreth, Todd A. Landreth and Jason P. Landreth, all of Virginia Beach; a sister, Fran Thompson of Bethalto, Ill.; and 13 grandchildren.
A funeral will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday by Fr. Edward L. Richardson at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is handling arrangements. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Arthritis Foundation.
