James Staples Whitehurst Jr., 64, of the 100 block of Benefit Road, died June 10, 1996, in a local hospital.
He was the son of the late James S. and Oler Stewart Whitehurst. He was preceded in death by a son, Harry M. Whitehurst. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and served in the National Guard.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda C. Whitehurst and Terri L. Whitehurst, both of Norfolk; three sons, James S. Whitehurst III of Virginia Beach, Gary Whitehurst of Stuart, Fla. and Rex A. Whitehurst of Chesapeake; two sisters, Betty Long of Grantville, N.C. and Judy Tripp of Elizabeth City, N.C.; two brothers, Ben Nelson of Chesapeake and Marvin Ray of Currituck, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tom Mercer officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Twiford Funeral Home, Great Bridge.
