WEEKLY BRIEFING

ATLANTIC FLEET BAND CONCERT: The Atlantic Fleet Band will give an admission-free ``pre-Flag Day'' concert on the grounds of the Francis Land House, 3131 Virginia Beach Blvd. at 7 p.m. Thursday. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Call 431-4000 for more information.

COAST GUARD AND CANADIANS: The Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City, N.C., has designated Canadian Forces Squadron 413 from Greenwood, Nova Scotia, as its sister squadron. The partnership evolved from a December 1994 operation in which aircraft from both commands rescued dozens of Ukrainian merchant mariners following an accident. Commanding officer of the Elizabeth City air station is Capt. Stanley Walz, and commanding officer of the Canadian Forces squadron is Lt. Col. Rick St. Germain.

MUSICAL SHOW PARKING: Special parking arrangements have been made for the sell-out performance of ``Salute to the Spirit of Victory,'' a marching/musical show scheduled for June 20 at Fort Monroe in Hampton. NAVAL MUSEUM PROGRAM: ``Broadsides and Buckshot,'' a two-part program featuring ``eye-witness'' accounts of the June 1813 Battle of Craney Island in which the British attempted to capture Norfolk, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The program, sponsored by the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, will be held in the Nauticus Theater on the Elizabeth River waterfront; admission is free.

Two members of the Living History Associates of Richmond will portray a U.S. Army sergeant and a U.S. Navy seaman who act as if the year were 1813. ARMY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: The Armed Forces School of Music, Army element, will present an Army birthday and Flag Day celebration on the front lawn of the school at 10 a.m. Friday. The ceremony will feature a musical tribute to the Army's lineage and history. Call 422-7504 for information.

MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS: FHC Choice, the coordinator of mental health care for military beneficiaries in Hampton Roads, is offering the following workshops:

``Can We Talk?'' is a program designed for military couples who wish to improve their communications skills.

``Relaxation and Stress Release'' is designed to help participants reduce tension and stress.

``Get the Word Out'' is aimed at helping you improve your communication skills.

``Stress: How to Manage It'' provides participants with healthy habits and techniques to alleviate symptoms of stress.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

DEPARTING

The Navy's first double-hulled oiler, the Patuxent, departs June 17 for a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. Its crew consists of 86 Military Sealift Command mariners and 23 Navy personnel.

Capt. Norman Scurria Jr. retires from the Coast Guard after 28 years of service on Aug. 1. He was honored in a retirement ceremony Tuesday at the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Air Station. Scurria serves as chief of staff for the Coast Guard's 5th District Headquarters in Portsmouth. After he retires, Scurria and his wife, Susan, will live in Elizabeth City.

A decommissioning ceremony for the 31-year-old aircraft carrier America will be held at 10 a.m. August 9 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. The America, known as ``the nation's flagship,'' was commissioned in January 1965. For more information about the decommissioning ceremony, call 444-3373.

CHANGE OF COMMAND

Capt. Ken Golden relieves Capt. Jerry Schill as commanding officer of Amphibious Squadron 8. Golden most recently served as commanding officer of the amphibious ship Dubuque. Schill's next assignment is as commanding officer of Naval Beach Group 2. by CNB
