Nellie Mae Edwards, 74, of the 300 block of Catalpa Avenue, died June 9, 1996, in Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News.
Born in Portsmouth, she was a foster grandparent for Council Pre-School for 18 years. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Newport News. She retired from American Red Cross of Newport News after 40 years of service. She was owner and operator of Nellie's Lounge of Newport News and operated Nellie's Boutique of Portsmouth.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice Shirley Francis of Hampton; two sons, John Otis Edwards and Richard L. Edwards Sr., both of Hampton; a sister, Gloria Matthews of Baltimore; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Joyce T. Edwards and Harriett Edwards of Hampton; and a host of cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. W.J. Hilton at Friendship Baptist Church, 1135 37th Street, Newport News. Burial will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Corprew Funeral home. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cook Brothers Funeral Home, Newport News. The body will be taken to the church at noon Saturday. The family will be at 390 Catalpa Ave., Hampton, and will assemble there for the procession to the church.
