The Suffolk Police Department has received a $344,616 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to hire five new police officers.
The grant, administered through the Universal Hiring Program of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Program, will cover about 75 percent of the salaries and benefits of the five officers and will be issued over a three- year period.
Last year, Suffolk hired three officers through another COPS program, COPS AHEAD.
Applicants should apply by June 21, in the city's personnel office in the Municipal Center, 441 Market St. The new officers will be hired in time to attend the Police Academy session that begins Sept. 9. by CNB
