Pier action was fairly slow Wednesday at most locations, with the exception of Outer Banks Pier.
Plenty of spot, a few sea mullet, pigfish and scattered bluefish were taken steadily throughout most of the day from Outer Banks Pier. Most of the spot were landed on bloodworms.
A few small spot and skates were taken on Kitty Hawk Pier.
Avalon Pier reported a few sea mullet and very small gray trout caught during the morning. Scattered small spot and mullet were landed in the afternoon.
A few small gray trout, mullet, spot and plenty of skates were taken by anglers on Nags Head Pier throughout most of the morning. Afternoon fishing was slow.
Some small bottom fish were decked sporadically during the day on Jennette's Pier.
South of Oregon Inlet, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught spot, croaker and sea mullet in muddy water.
Avon Pier reported some small bottom fish, small gray trout and a few flounder taken.
Plenty of Spanish mackerel were landed just before dark Tuesday evening on Frisco Pier. A few Spanish mackerel and bluefish were taken early Wednesday morning, and a few bottom fish were caught during the afternoon.
Surfcasters caught fair numbers of small spot, croaker and a few mullet from deeper sloughs along the northern beaches on the rising tide Wednesday.
A few trout, small bluefish and bottom fish were landed around Oregon Inlet, both from the shore and from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge. Anglers caught scattered small bottom fish along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.
A few puppy drum were beached Tuesday evening at Cape Point. A few pompano, small blues and bottom fish were landed Wednesday.
Fishing was slow from Ramp 55 to Hatteras Inlet.
Headboats operating around Oregon Inlet reported good catches on both morning and afternoon trips.
Intermediate charters, trolling a few miles outside Oregon Inlet, reported fairly good king mackerel fishing.Blue water action off Oregon Inlet was good, with some limits of dolphin taken. Fair numbers of king mackerel and scattered tuna also were landed. Two sailfish were released by the Hooker and two white marlin by the Carolinean.
Hatteras charters reported good dolphin fishing. A few wahoo also were taken. Several billfish were released, including a blue marlin and a white marlin by the Citation and two white marlin by the Harper's Folly. Most of the billfish action was around the southern triple zero.
The water temperature was 54.5 degrees Wednesday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 77 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.
After the third day of fishing in the 38th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, the leader is The Girl Next Door with a 535-pound blue marlin. The Bullfrog is in second place with a 479-pound blue marlin followed by The Sea Creature in third with a 445-pound blue marlin. The tournament continues through Saturday. by CNB
