HONORED FOR HEROISM

Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. has cited two Outer Banks residents among the recipients of the 1995 Governor's Award for Bravery and Heroism.

Deputy Sheriff Walter Kevin Duprey of Manteo and 8-year-old Robert Ray Harris of Kitty Hawk will be among the 18 North Carolinians honored at a ceremony in the Executive Mansion on June 26 at 5 p.m.

Duprey and Dare County Sheriff Bert Austin were the first officers to respond to an Aug. 30, 1995, radio dispatch about swimmers in heavy surf and riptides on Hatteras Island.

Duprey dove into the rough surf with a borrowed boogie board to reach a swimmer. Within 20 minutes, Duprey had the 39-year-old vacationer on shore.

In July 1995, Robbie Harris was playing in his yard when he saw his neighbors' house on fire.

Robbie ran to the burning house and dashed up the stairs to alert the family of four, who were sleeping at the time.

After helping the family get out safely, Robbie ran home, dialed 911 and reported the fire.

Robbie, the son of Dana and Cindy Harris, just completed the third grade at Kitty Hawk Elementary School. by CNB
