Residents of this north beach community will pay a penny more in property taxes for every $100 in value in the coming year.
That boost was part of the 1996-97 Kitty Hawk budget approved unanimously Thursday night.
The $2.2 million budget provides for an increase in property taxes to 29 cents per $100 in value. That means the owner of a $100,000 home will pay an additional $10 in property taxes.
Town Manager Robert Nicholl said the additional revenue will be used to offset tipping fees for solid waste disposal. Five cents of the overall tax will go to solid waste disposal, while the remaining 24 cents will fund general operating expenses of the town.
``When the county closed the landfill and turned the responsibility back to the towns, we had to budget money for tipping fees, and we were going into the hole. I've set aside the solid waste disposal portion of the tax into an enterprise fund to take care of tipping fees,'' Nicholl said.
Town Councilman Ken Hollowell was pleased with the 1996-97 spending plan.
``It's a bare-bones budget,'' Hollowell said. ``But I think it's a good budget.''
The new operating budget includes $763,891 for police, $248,000 for the fire department and $401,411 for administration costs.
In other action Thursday, the council unanimously approved a proposal by the North Carolina League of Municipalities, which will provide liability insurance to the town for $38,000 a year.
