The superintendent of the Western Tidewater Regional Jail has been named the Jail Administrator of the Year by the American Jail Association.
John R. ``Jack'' Dewan, who has been superintendent at the jail in Suffolk since December 1991, was presented the award at the association's recent conference in St. Louis.
The association includes members from all 50 states as well as from Puerto Rico, Canada, Australia and six European countries.
Dewan was the first jail administrator at the Virginia Beach City Jail in 1980, and has been chief deputy sheriff, state training analyst for the Department of Criminal Justice Services in Richmond, and the director of the Portsmouth Sheriff's Office Training Academy.
He was honored, in part, because of ``his exemplary operational programs initiated and conducted for both jail staff and inmates, and his overall expertise in jail architecture, security and operational matters,'' a news release said. ILLUSTRATION: John R. ``Jack'' Dewan, the jail's superintendent
