Kudos to editorial writer Kerry Dougherty for her Perspectives column (June 1) saluting Dr. Richard Andrews and his dedication to migrant medical care. Those of us who have had the good fortune to work with him over the past two years can attest to the fact that he practices medicine as Ms. Dougherty so picturesquely described.
During the two years that Dr. Andrews was not with the migrant program, he worked with Eastern Shore Rural Health, one of Virginia's 24 community-health centers. Three-fourths of these community-health centers serve rural areas; the others serve inner-city areas.
Eastern Shore Rural Health provides services through Children's Health Center, Bayview Medical Center, Atlantic Medical Center, Onley Medical Center, Tangier Health Center and the Nassawadox Medical Center. Migrants have always been welcome at all of our centers, as have all people needing medical care, regardless of ability to pay.
Community-health-center physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and clerical staff take great pride in daily service to Virginia's forsaken patients: the rural and urban poor, the uninsured and underinsured. We are fortunate that Dr. Andrews has chosen to be part of the effort.
