G. BRIDGE, W. BRANCH DOMINATE TEAM

Regular season and tournament champion Great Bridge and Western Branch dominated the annual All-Southeastern District girls soccer selections with nine of the 13 players coming from the two schools.

Making the first team for the second consecutive year are Oscar Smith's Katie Kraemer; Great Bridge's Meghan Salo; Western Branch's Mimi Knoop, Katie MacPhail and Kathy Dalton; and Indian River's Tiffany Swiney. The Wildcats' Jennifer Hilborn moved up from the second team to first team this season, as did Western Branch's Ciara Lascano.

The Bruins' Knoop led the team in scoring with 12 goals and four assists, and sophomore Dalton anchored a Bruins' defense that had a 1.3 goals-against average. MacPhail recorded five shutouts as Western Branch finished 6-4-5. The senior has signed to play volleyball at UNC-Wilmington.

Lascano is a senior forward.

Indian River's Swiney recorded 132 saves and four shutouts and was named the team's MVP for the third time in four years.

Churchland, which had no players on the first team a year ago, is represented this year by Kate Foley, Kathryn Crandall and Dorothy Laskin.

Kraemer led Oscar Smith to the Eastern Region quarterfinal with 16 goals and five assists. The sophomore led the district in scoring despite being used primarily as a defender.

Sophomore defender Wendy Golt, also from Oscar Smith, is a newcomer to the first team, having never played soccer before this season.

The Wildcats' selections are Hilborn, Salo, Kendal Smith, Jessie Berdick and Kathleen Miller. Hilborn tallied eight goals and nine assists before suffering soft tissue damage in her hip that ended her season after the first nine games.

``She's easily the best finisher in the district,'' said Wildcats coach Harvey Regan.

Defenders Salo and Smith anchored the Wildcats' defense with tenacious, aggressive play.

Berdick, a sophomore midfielder, missed the district season last year with a knee injury. Regan regards her as the team's best passer and player with the best touch. She scored two of Great Bridge's three goals in the district tournament.

Miller, a ninth-grader, took over the scoring role in Hilborn's absence. She finished with nine goals.

Churchland, the district's Cinderella team with a 5-4-1 record, won thanks to its defense led by Laskin at stopper and Foley and Crandall in midfield. No district team scored more than one goal against Churchland. Crandall also was the team's high scorer with three goals. ILLUSTRATION: Jessie Berdick
