Some of the action from Thursday's School Board meeting: The board approved a counseling policy that's essentially the same one it's had since last year. Guidance policy wins approval
But the new policy makes clear the district's intent to offer a particular type of counseling - ``personal/social'' counseling - unless parents tell the district in writing that they don't want it for their kids.
Suffolk schools will offer three types of counseling - ``academic guidance, career guidance and personal/social counseling.''
The policy says parents will receive written information on the offerings annually.
Virginia's Board of Education told districts to adopt a new policy by July. State Literacy Test scores are reviewed
The board reviewed 1996 Literacy Passport Test scores and partial results from another standardized exam.
Some scores have improved since 1994-95, but administrators said scores wouldn't be fully disclosed until July.
Some results:
This year, 52 percent of sixth-graders passed the LPT's three parts on the first try, up from 49 percent in 1994-95. (See related story on this page.)
Overall, fourth-graders' 1996 performance on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills improved in eight key categories, including reading comprehension and total math. Smith presides over final meeting
Board Chairman Arthur Smith presided over his last board meeting Thursday.
Smith, a four-year board veteran, thanked staffers for their hard work over the years.
He unsuccessfully campaigned for his Nansemond Borough seat, which he lost to John Riddick in the May election.
Riddick and Sleepy Hole's James Perkinson, also elected in May, will join the board July 1.
Board member Clarice Johnson didn't campaign to keep her Sleepy Hole seat.
The board will have its organizational meeting at 7:30 a.m. Monday, July 1 at Nansemond River High. Superintendent Trump's new contract OK'd
Superintendent Joyce Trump has one school year under her belt as the district's chief executive officer.
On Thursday, Chairman Smith praised the board's decision to hire her last year.
Last month, the board unanimously approved Trump's new, four-year contract.
Under the new deal, she'll earn $79,585.11 annually and get a 4.5 percent annual raise.
