A Virginia Beach woman was killed Saturday afternoon when her car veered off the road and flipped over in a ditch.
Ellen Hathaway, 60, of the 5400 block of Wexford Court died at the scene, said Suffolk Police and Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue officials.
The accident happened about 1:05 p.m. in the 6000 block of Holland Road, or U.S. Route 58, just east of Lummis Road.
Hathaway was headed west on the divided, four-lane highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman's car - a 1991 Ford Escort - drifted off the left side of the highway, then swerved back across the road, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins. Hathaway apparently over-corrected, and the car ran into the ditch on the right - flipping over and landing on its roof, he said.
Hathaway, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown halfway out the window and pinned between the car and the ground, Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue volunteers said.
The weather was not a factor in the crash, and Hathaway apparently was not speeding, Simpkins said. An investigation is continuing.
