MELVIN F. SMITH

Melvin F. Smith, 63, died June 14, 1996, in his residence.

A native of Norfolk, Mr. Smith retired from Carpenter's Local Union (NU)613. He was Baptist. He was a die-hard Redskins fan and avid fisherman. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Award, a bronze star, Army O.E.C. Medal (Japan), Korean Service medal, President Unit Citation with three Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars.

Survivors include his loving companion of 14 years, Mary E. Sparks; a daughter, Cherylann Gregory of Virginia Beach; two sons, Ed Sparks and his wife, Betty Ann, of Blacksburg, Va., and Benjamin Sparks and his wife, Danette, of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, Chucky Smith, Amber Gregory, Donald Gregory III, Corey Gregory, all of Virginia Beach, Edwards Sparks, David Sparks, both of Blacksburg, Tiffany Sparks of Norfolk, Benjamin Sparks Jr. and Cameron Sparks, both of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
