Henry Abner Davis Jr., 84, of the 900 block of Anna St., died Friday June 14, 1996, peacefully at his residence.
Mr. Davis had been a teacher at Booker T. Washington and a principal at John T. West, James Monroe and Norview Elementary; he retired after 32 year of service with Norfolk Public Schools. He was a native of Lynchburg, Va., and the son of the late Henry A. Sr. and Elizabeth Majors Davis. He was a member of St. John's A.M.E. Church. Mr. Davis was active in many phases of the life of the church including the Steward Board, Layman Group, Broad Creek Fellowship, and for many years he was superintendent of the Sunday School.
Mr. Davis was a graduate of West Virginia State College and was active in the alumni association. He received his master's degree from New York University. Mr. Davis was one of the area's finest tennis players. He was a charter member of the Norfolk Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He was a dedicated member of the board of directors of the Hunton YMCA and worked very hard as a fund raiser for the Y. He was a member of the Broad Creek Shores Civic League. Mr. Davis was a member and 32nd degree Mason of Campbell Lodge (NU)67 Prince Hall Mason. He was member of the Eureka Lodge, the Chesterfields and the Hiawatha Social and Beneficial Club.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 61 years, Evelyn Harris Davis of the home; three daughters, Henrietta Davis Grant of Lanham, Md., Sandra Davis-Davis of Richmond, Va., and Marjorie Davis Scott of Laurel, Md.; five grandchildren, Robin M. Grant, Damian A. Davis, Tania L. Grant, Valencia D. Casimir and Sterling L. Scott II; and a son-in-law, Robert M. Grant.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in St. John's A.M.E. Church, 545 E. Bute St., Norfolk, by the Rev. I.W. Knight. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday. A wake will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
